“Over 12% of Bernalillo County residents 65 and older live on income below the poverty level,” says Julie Morgas Baca, Bernalillo County manager. “To help address and draw attention to food insecurity in our senior community we are again working with Silver Horizons’ Free Groceries for Seniors program.”
“Too many low-income seniors are struggling to have enough food to eat and some are raising grandchildren,” says Ron Hidalgo, executive director, Silver Horizons. “Drive-thru grocery pick-up events allow us to continue the food assistance while keeping seniors safe and helping with their quality of life during these difficult times.”
Organizers are following strict protocols to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Food will be pre-packed in boxes. Staff will be wearing masks and gloves and maintaining social distance.
Seniors picking up food may not arrive earlier than one hour before the pick up starts, must wear masks, stay in line, and remain in their vehicle at all times. Workers will put a food box into seniors’ vehicles.
